A lot of good feedback here, I appreciate all of your input and will take note of everything while making my final determination.

MikeW, you are correct in your assessment about my other bikes and the gearing. Cost and gaps are certainly a determining factor, I will certainly be looking for the best balance.

Bandera, I think you live around the type of terrain that would be similar to mine. Knowing that a 3 speed works for you is certainly encouraging.

Based on everybody's feedback here, it sounds like I'd be ok with any of the shop-grade brands, and that I may find a 5 speed or higher useful. Parts availability will certainly be a plus for me, and I don't mind maintenance if necessary. I'll look into the gearing ratios and what would be the best combination with my chainring.
