Wheel clearance on old road bike

Dear All,

Many years ago (15?) I bought my first road bike, a Bianchi gold race 100 like this:

Bianchi Road Bike Specifications

It has been sitting around for a long time as the old wheels (and various other bits!) fell apart. The plan is to rebuild it for our son.

I have a pair of Fulcrum racing 5 evo wheels which work fine, the only problem is that the clearance under the front fork is zero with the 23 mm tyres I use on our other road bikes. With a Michelin Lithion 2 for example, body weight causes rub (!). I did find an 18 mm continental tyre on clear-out which fitted OK, but this wore out quickly and was rather uncomfortable!

Now, I changed tyres several times on the old wheels without special care or attention and don't remember this problem. I believe they were Rigida rims as in the link above. Could it be that the rim width was significantly wider? Any other ideas like a new fork to fix the problem?

cheers,

Jim
