Truth be told my town bike uses old-school hybrid gearing: an alloy shell 1956 Sturmey AW hub with '50's Cyclo 3-cog derail operated set-up making it a 9 speed.
This gives me a gear range from 41-106 GI. Top gear is for decorative purposes only but the 50,59,63,72 GI are used daily and the steps make sense once one figures out the shift pattern. Nice to have the 41 and the 83 gets used w/ Big tailwinds.
A 5 speed Nexus 44/22 gives a range of 41,54,63,72,83: Nice.
If I was building a new town bike ( I'm not) this would work fine for me.
