Seemed like repeated mistakes by Tinkov-Saxo. First none of Contador's teammates made the initial selection, pretty awful performance I'd say. Then Contador didn't go with the Talansky group, I guess he still thought Froome was the biggest threat to mark. Then Contador didn't go with Nibali and his two teammates, by then he should have realized that Froome was weakened and no longer needed to be marked. Granted Contador was totally unsupported by his team, while his rivals had great help. Perhaps this will motivate Contador to be less cautious at the Tour, and will embolden not only him but other riders to attack Froome.
