You are being charged for the scrap price plus a huge markup so the Waltons can take more of your money and keep it for themselves. The bikes aren't worth it and need a whole lot of work out of the factory to basically build it and tune it up. They are heavy pieces of cheap metal with cheaper parts bolted on them like it was an Erector set.

I would rather just rent for $21.50 a day and probably get a more decent bike. Or maybe see if there is a Craigenlisten or something similar. I am sure you can find something or work something out somewhere with someone for something at least semi-decent.

Also on a related note to my above statement, until you have worked in a bike shop and get a bunch of turds from Wal-Mart and similar box stores in the shop please do not comment on how great they are. They are fine for a kid just starting out and will throw away the bike in a year or someone who legitimately cannot afford something better but they are still crap. Even a low end bike store bike is going to be better because usually it is put together by people who know bikes.
I've got a cheapo bike from Wal-Mart, and it's good enough for what I use it for. I really don't ride very much, but I really enjoy touring in Europe by bike. If a $150 bike will go 400 miles, that's enough for me. But in any event it doesn't matter, because there is no way for me to get a cheapo Wal-Mart bike to Europe without it costing two or three times what the bike is worth.
