That is the set-up that I have now. On a tri bike with the shifters on the ends of the inside aero bars, the brake levers seem like they should take the brunt of a crash first. I switched side on the shifters to put the base outwards to scrape first. Doesn't bother me, I'm left handed and usually backwards anyway.
