Some advice please on choosing a hybrid bike

Hello, I am hoping there are some knowledgeable people here can help me choose between two hybrids I've been eyeing. I haven't ridden much recently having gotten fed up with how heavy and clunky my 12 yr old MTB (a Saracen fastrax) was.

I'm in the UK, 280lb/130kg, 5'11/180cm, long in trunk. I have a lot of steep hills near me, country roads (tarmacked but often mud covered with some loose stones) and plenty of towpaths/canal tracks. I was looking for something practical and fast enough for simple work commuting that could take these roads, and also be used for some fun rides in the country during days off, and a hybrid seems to right way to go. Unfortunately past selecting frame size, front suspension (lockable), brake type and gears the other more detailed bike specs I've been looking at don't mean much to me!
I havent the expertise or patience for a lot of fiddling with the mechanics of a bike (for that reason I ruled out hydrolic brakes for example) but do want a high quality ride. I've narrowed it down to two bikes, do you feel one stands out as a clear winner?

Halfords | Boardman Performance MX Race Bike - Medium 19"

Specialized Crosstrail Disc 2014 Hybrid Bike | Evans Cycles

if you feel they're both duds, any other suggestions of bikes in this sort of spec that would be a good buy? (available easily in the UK)

Thanks to all who answer!
