Now this is a good idea. As mentioned, some rear axles share the same thread; a spare one of these would have made a perfect impromptu tap.

If you're just chasing damaged threads, it's sufficient to just cut 3 or 4 slots along the bolt; I use a dremel with a cut-off wheel.

But you can even make threads from scratch like this too, at least through a couple of mm of ally plate... if you also grind a taper onto the end of the bolt.

I own no taps or dies (or a lathe for that matter), but that doesn't stop me cutting threads
