I was fearless when it came to taking things apart to see how they work. I spent more money & more time on them than what they're worth, but they provided me with invaluable learning opportunities.

i have a 2011 Surly that I don't dare touch because it's new and I'm afraid to learn on it. All my other bikes are mid-'70's - early '90's and I've taken them all completely apart, one component at a time.

Good for you!
Thank you! And I haven't let anyone dissuade me. I set my mind to what I wanted and am following through. Learning little bits along the way - it's the little things that matter.

Like this evening, I installed the new crankset, and I learned about chain line, and making sure the chainring and the freewheel were properly lined up (they weren't). And also handily my crank lets me move the actual chainring from the outside of the crankarm to the inside, which made it line up with the freewheel. I think putting the chain on is going to be another big learning opportunity.
Here's what she looks like so far:

Waiting on the quill stem to arrive so I can put the bars on. And the brakes. Already have the levers and cabling. I suppose I should get some pedals at some point...

Either way, it's been fun so far.
