You want to have the right range for the terrain and conditions and closer steps between the gears makes for smoother changes and makes maintaining cadence easier... my vintage road bike has a 12-21 and a 13-26 that I can interchange and can widen the gearing further if I swap the derailleur / chain to handle a wider gear range.
