Click/pop while pedaling

Up until recently I was getting quite a bit of noise from the crank/BB area on my road bike. I pulled out the square-taper BB and found it to be a cheap piece of junk that felt pretty rough when turning the spindle.

So I replaced that with a new BB, but I'm still getting an occasional pop/click sound while riding. I was hoping it wasn't the new BB, so I swapped out my Shimano PD-A530 platform/SPD pedals with the Wellgo platforms on my wife's bike. Rode a few miles and didn't hear any pops. So apparently it's the pedals.

Upon close inspection I cannot feel any play in the pedal spindles. They have just over 2,000 miles on them. Surely they wouldn't be bad already??

When I first got the A530's I actually sent them back within a week because one pedal did have some visible play in the spindle, so my current set is the replacement that I have been using since August of last year.
