I've always been a morning rider, but recently I ventured out around 5:30pm. Sunset was predicted for 8:30pm, so it was still plenty light out - but a very different feeling. I really enjoyed it! Of course, it was on a weekend on back roads - wouldn't suggest a 5:30pm ride during the week on car-heavy roads.
