I propose these definitions:

Hammerfest : riding hard and feeling strong

Sufferfest : riding hard and feeling bad

Survival time : too tired to ride hard, struggling to get home

Usually they follow each other in that order.

I usually proceed from hammerfest to survival time, with very little time in sufferfest. Sufferfest requires strength of will that I lack.
