I faced this same dilemma in 2006 when I bought my last new car but with a slight twist. It had to be able to carry a recumbent trike inside and be able to accommodate the same trike outside of the car on a regular rack which I already owned. I admit to being terminally cheap so buying a truck or SUV was not going to happen. I may transport the trike once or twice a month but I needed the car to go to work daily. I didn't want an expensive, gas-guzzling vehicle. I ended up buying a Scion XB. It is reliable, cheap to operate, and has enough room for me and the trike if I didn't want to mount the rack. It will easily accommodate two DF bikes if you take off the front wheels and fold down the rear seats. The rack I use is Rhode Gear 2 bike rack - no longer available new, but fairly easily found used. I mount the front wheels of the trike on the rack and the rear on the roof of the Scion. There is no way I could use a roof rack on this vehicle and still get the trike up and down off the roof.
