I can't imagine it being that difficult to set up some appropriate "real world" experiments. Get a number of hairy riders together (perhaps that's the challenge right there) and have them ride after a warm up. Then shave them and see how they do making sure the weather hasn't changed. Do it a few times with as many subject you can get each time, and there you go. I'm sure I'm over simplifying it at least to some degree, but I'm surprised this has not been done before.
Generally the result was no difference was found, which is why this current wind tunnel test is somewhat controversial.
