The RD is fine, it will work with 7-8-9-10 speed shifters. To make it work as designed you need a 9-speed cassette and chain to go with the 9-speed shifter and then you will need to adjust both the RD and the shifter. Or there is an alternate cable routing than will increase the shifter throw and let you use these shifters with an 8-speed cassette.
