I'm a practically-minded person. It does no good to talk talk talk all sorts of blah blah blah and provide no practicalities. It's pointless. To all that you've said, I say ... "So What?" So if it matters that much to you ... what are you going to DO about it.

Oh and to clarify ... I don't think you're right about most of what you say.

Multi-story parking garages every half mile or so would stimulate people to use transit to get from parking garages to destinations. Once people grow accustomed to using transit to get from where they park to their destination, they will automatically consider using transit directly from home. This is a crucial step because only once transit is on par with driving, will personal driving become something people do only for trips most suited to driving, such as picking up things that are difficult to carry by bus.
First of all, thank you for providing something a bit more concrete to work with.

Secondly ... I don't understand. You're going to reduce parking by providing more parking? Multi-story parking garages every half mile (800 metres) or so is more than what already exists.

How far out from the centre of the city are these multi-story parking garages going to go? Our destinations are located all over the place, not just in the centre of the city.

Also, personally I don't think people aren't likely going to pay to take transit for a quarter mile (400 metres) or less. You might, however, encourage more people to walk a little bit more with an idea like that. But they will still drive to the parking garage and walk from there.

And, do you have any idea how expensive it is to put up multi-story parking garages? Plus, where are they going to put them? There isn't a whole lot of available land in the middle of most cities ... not every half mile or so. And again ... how far out are these things going to go?

Finally, am I understanding you correctly that your proposal is that the city would pour a whole lot of money into putting up these multi-story parking garages every half mile or so, as a temporary measure. After 10 or 20 or 30 years, people would be using transit, and these multi-story parking garages would be torn down?

Not criticising the idea ... just encouraging you to think through the practicalities of the idea.
