I have a couple of those cranksets and can confirm that yes, you do need the asymmetric spindle. As mentioned above it's possible to substitute a symmetric spindle and live with the left crank arm set further out, but I wouldn't recommend that since AT cranks have a large 'q-factor' to begin with.
