Bikes: 1938 Raleigh Record Ace (2), 1938 Schwinn Paramount, 1961 Torpado, 1964? Frejus, 1980 Raleigh 753 Team Pro, Moulton, other stuff...

Way back, in the beginning of time, at least some front derailleurs had built-in cable stops (Campag and Cyclo for two). Running the housing under the BB will work fine.
