Whether is gas or a cyclist the answer is the same for me. Pause (access if it's worth my effort) and let it all out. In the cyclist case, I see if he or she is dragging, then I pass all out till I'm ahead, then resume my pace. If it's gas I make sure is just that and if I can assert is only gas, I let it rip! However, like everything, sometimes the strategy fails and you get a challenge up hill or end up doing laundry that day! LOL!
