You're right, the cut and sculpted teeth are what put the glide in Powerglide (or is it the Power?). They create shift gates which encourage the chain to shift at a time that the next ring is properly lined up for smooth engagement.

BTW- this may be the single most frequently asked question here on BF, and IMO should be a sticky, along with some of the other very basic FAQs.
