Refinishing carbon fiber frame

I picked up a cosmetically challenged mid 80s carbon fiber ( aluminum lugged) frame today. No apparent damage but lots of small scratches. I was wondering if I could make it look pristine by sanding off the clear coat and then applying a new layer of clear acrylic. I'm guessing it will be difficult to gauge the depth of the current clearcoat. Thinking that I might go a little deeper even if I'm doing it by hand do you see any big issues? Have any of you had experience doing this? Would love to get some suggestions. Thanks.
