Bikes: 20xx Fuji Palisade (don't mock me) / '92? RacingBik (lka Aegis) CF/ '99 Specialized FSR Sport SOLD / 93 Robinson Pro (my teen years BMX,still have her!)

It might be a little bit ghetto for some and it's not an option if you simply must leave the cf visible, but I just Plasti-dipped my cf frame gray. The flat gray frame with a cf fork looks shweet, I love the contrast of a flat gray or black finish with all the shiny bits of a bike. I was in the same boat, frame is 20+ years old and had its war wounds here and there and also the decals were under the clearcoat and didn't float my boat. So I said why not and PlastiDipped it, actually I used the Rustoleum brand 'Flexidip' because it applies a little thinner, more paint-like. My only complaint is on a cf frame, you can actually feel the few ounces of rubber you just sprayed on! If you're determined to rehab the current paint job, I'd maybe try to buff out the scratches if they're not too deep. If it comes down to sanding, I'd definitely at least START with some super-fine (2000+) automotive wet/dry paper and see how it goes, using grittier paper as needed. You can always take off more, but you can't put it back! I've gotten some good results wet sanding clearcoat with superfine paper, gives you that flawless wet look. OR, have you thought about a satin clearcoat? More forgiving and more modern, idk how it'd be going over a glossy coat but I wouldn't think that'd be a problem. Regardless,I'd find the best quality clearcoat around, probably like $20 for a good one instead of $5 for crap...well worth the difference. Dust is the nemesis of a good clearcoat., so take some measures to prevent it as best you can...the backyard is NOT a good place for clearcoating lol. Hope it comes out great, good luck with it
