Read the book before you leave and save notes on your phone. Oregon is incredible. CA1 is kind of scary. If you keep the weight down there isn't a hill that you have to walk, the steepest pitch is just south of Elk, CA. Stop to take lots of pics and have a blast.
I don't have a smartphone any more and don't plan on getting another one, so it will be paper maps for me. I'd also like to have 1-2 books on me at a time and I imagine it won't be too often that I run across a decent bookstore. Regardless, I'm planning on saving on weight in any other way I can.
