I think the comment that it may have something to do with image is close to the answer.
My friends on our D1 soccer team at school are pretty scrawny/lanky and a few of them also ride. Maybe the guys who get paid to play are more developed because a part of their money comes from sponsorships, which require that they look good so that women like your wife buy their products.
