ALERT: Purists may prefer not to read any further...
moreover, we need not go into what possessed me to by a rusty De Rosa frame (c1985--SLX tubes) and out of ignorance and inexperience and just plain foolishness pour so much money into it that I should have my EBAY account canceled or at least monitored by a responsible adult...
...but now, here it is, repainted, and cobbled together with a mish-mash of way overpriced and period inappropriate Campy parts...but I still find it's a lot of bike for this set of legs that is 5 weeks shy of Medicare...
sooo, with great reluctance I installed a 6sp FW with a 30 tooth cog. this of course required ditching the nuovo record RD; it is replaced by a humble Suntour Vx...
but now...the Campy friction shifter can barely manage the task--it takes pretty much 180d of arc to go through the range of the 6sp.
I don't think the RD or FW are the problem--I had a Motobecane with the same RD, and an even bigger low gear (34t, IIRC). There may be some stretch or compression in the cable and cable housing (LBS sold me a piece of housing that is coiled, not parallel strand), but I think that a shifter with a large diameter would provide quicker and more precise shifting.
Opinions? Recommendations?
thanks in advance--
