Boston to Buffalo

Hey All,

I'm looking for some route advice. I have a one way car ride to Boston in a couple of weeks (helping a friend move from California), and I want to ride over to Detroit before hopping on the Amtrak back to home. Along the lake through southern Ontario looks pretty mellow, but I could use some help with getting over to Buffalo from Boston. Just from looking at maps I have NO sense of what are good roads to be on, and where the mellow camping spots are. Adventure cycling seems to have a couple of routes that overlap and connect Boston to Buffalo, up to Portland and then west through the middle of New Hampshire, Vermont and along the southern edge of Lake Ontario. What do you think of that? Is there another core area I should be looking at? Or zones to definitely avoid?
Mileage/time isn't a big deal. I prefer to camp the whole time and generally avoid anything much bigger than a 'town'.
