Also, I'm not sure why 'doing hammer rides all week' is a bad thing. Granted, I'm an old man with a few leg injuries so I got a coach but there are plenty of people out there that do it. Many of them seem to get on podiums.
Did your coach OK today's hammer ride? Did he/she explain to you where they fit or don't fit into your program? If so, then maybe coaching isn't for you. If not, then you need a new coach.
