My commute last night was fine for me, my longest leg (22 miles) ended with an accident 4 blocks from my house however.
Two teens were hit by a car. One died, other serious injuries. Driver okay. Reports state they crossed on a red and had been possibly drinking. It was 9pm and very dark out, street lamps are not real bright. I rolled up just after it happened (fire was just rolling up and the station is only 2 blocks away) and I saw no lights on the bikes lying down, no helmets around, no reflective or light clothing on the victims. I cannot saw wiht 100% confidence that this is the case, but at the time it seemed like it was lacking. Plus the reports from this morning indicating alcohol make it seem plausible there was none.
They had no safety equipment. It seems like none of the fixie riders around here care about that, never have reflectors and always wearing dark clothing, even at night and no lights on their bikes. I have yet to see them obey traffic signals as well. But I made it home after 22 miles, even through construction areas, narrow shoulders, busy but dark roads, etc. But I ride with two front lights, two rear lights and reflective jersey.
Moral of the story: dress safe, ride safe and stay safe.
