There is a book called The Five Languages of Love or something like that, and it is actually interesting to read about how people send and receive love differently. My wife values "service", which means me taking her Honda to the garage and getting it fixed without interrupting her day is far more important than sending flowers. I don't value service, so I would view her trying to do that for me as an annoyance. You have to figure out how to send love in the manner your partner best receives.
My (female) cousin gave me a brief synopsis of that book - I'm still figuring out how to drive home the point to my wife that I'm all about the physical touch *sigh*
