Actually that's not so difficult.

Instead of seating the nipple in the carbon you make the carbon a non structural fairing (a la FLO) and seat the nipple in the alloy rim. This saves 1-2 layers of carbon and greatly reduces cost. And, if you start of with an alloy rim that isn't a complete pig, you can get the weight down quite a bit.
