On bike touring trips, free wifi when available. Either an Android based smartphone or tablet without a phone plan or data plan. If free wifi not available for several days, not a big deal.
On my last trip, I brought a 7 inch tablet that I did not have a phone plan or data plan for, it was only usable where there was wifi. A friend brought a portable hot spot that I could use to access internet. For a trip of over a month, only once did we find a need to access the internet for a weather forecast where we had to use his portable hot spot because we did not have wifi. But I could imagine some other trips I have been on that we might have checked the weather forecast more often than that.
In a couple months I will go on a canoe trip for 9 days. No cell service, no internet, no e-mail, no AM or FM radio, will only have a marine band radio with weather band for weather forecasts. I am retired, I grew up when the internet was not even dreamed of. I can get by without internet for extended periods of time without going thru withdrawal symptoms.
