You folks have given me a lot options. Thanks so much! There's an LBS I've been getting basics from like helmets and such and I'll see what they'd take a trade in for and base my decision off that. Sounds like at the worst I can get basic components like crankset, BB, and FD for ~$100 and end up with a very usable bike. I like that idea too. The shifters and breaks were stock so I can reference that for new parts. As far as going back to the seller I don't feel like he was completely dishonest. I rode it and didn't know better. Blame myself more than anything but that's part of Craigslist shopping, trying to get a good deal and being a newbie. Plus, I'm still able to tow my kids around the neighborhood despite missing gears I was stressing out about this but now I have a game plan. You guys rock!
