Which CAAD were you looking at. 50/34 is a compact crank and does seem to come on more bikes these days. A standard crank is 53/39. I also prefer a standard but it's really flat where I live. If I lived in an area where I would have to do a lot of hills I would go compact. Aside from that you can definately go from a compact to a standard for less than $700....bike shops are just insane with the pricing IMO.
