I tend to go back and forth between a CF road bike (Specialized Roubaix) and a touring bike (Salsa Casseroll). It depends on what I feel like doing on a given day. They are both great bikes and perform for the type of riding they are designed for. Lately the touring ride with 28's for tires gives me a more relaxed, comfortable ride so I've ridden it quite a bit this season. No matter what you choose, go slow in making the decision and listen to a good LBS guy. In your price range you'll get a nice ride or you may want to consider a gently used bike and maybe get more for your dollars. Lastly, just keep riding and enjoying it!
