If you have the time to spend and would rather spend it cleaning your bike, go for it.

I can't do it that often, myself.
I'll keep it clean in-season, but in the off-season, I'm less picky about it. By September, I'm on my 3rd or 4th chain, and I won't get a new one until Spring.
