You are correct about moldable shoes. They are great in theory, and some have excellent results molding them. Some people, including myself, can never get them to fit properly. Buying shoes that feel good in the store is my solution as well. It's like having a house built Vs. buying an existing house. With an existing house, what you see is what you get.
