Check the equipment inventory for the teams that competed in the 2014 Tour. Everyone was on tubulars on every stage, including the time trials.
I know that manufacturers and high-end shops need to push pricey clinchers to the lawyers and dentists that make up a profitable market demographic. But for those emptying their wallets to emulate peloton heroes: the bottom line is that for a variety of good reasons, pros don't race on clinchers.
On Tour- it causes fits among those tire and wheel manufacturers that don't make tubulars. But a little sanding and re-labelling fixes that.
