There's a big difference between a high heart rate reached during a relatively short effort and functional threshold. The only way to establish functional threshold or its equivalent is by doing the test per Friel or Carmichael's instructions. The functional threshold heart rate is one that's obtained by maintaining the max effort you can hold for the duration of the test so is lower than what you might hit over short hard efforts at levels that would be unsustainable.
