That's part of it, I think. They only do a few things. Cannondale makes road bikes, mountain bikes, BMX bikes, etc. etc. Specialized makes (or, at least sells under its brand) all of the above + everything else from saddles to tubes. Cervelo does not even position as a bike manufacturer, but rather a carbon frame manufacturer. They have laser focus on what they do and they claim that they have a lot of unique technology and know-how in that narrow area.
BTW, though Cervelo does make road frames and bikes, their original niche is triathlon/TT bikes. I would say that they are the biggest name in the triathlon market, bigger than even Trek.
