You're forgetting one other option...the option that is used all the time. It depends on which kind of game delivery you are planning on doing...it sounds like you are planning on the game being web based and not at home based(downloaded and installed on the persons computer).

Don't overcomplicate things. Simplify, simplify, simplify. Just learn to look at all options.

Use cookies. Store everything in cookies and that takes care of your problem. The program looks for prestored values in the cookie and uses that value. The cookie can be rewritten when the user wants to change the value.
