i am convinced that longer commutes that start and end in the cold and dark are not sustainable.
depends... what's long and what's cold?

less than 1 hr and more than -15C (5F) i find no problem as long as you can change at destination.

longer than 1hr commute i've never really tried, but rec rides longer than 1 hr can get cold on the feet and hands, so i expect the same problem by cold.

less than -15C i don't have much experience, so for me it's the lower limit where riding becomes difficult. i'm sure i could move that down a little if it were often colder.

i had many 40minute commutes in the -10C range this January that were WONDERFUL!
