I saw some
WD40 Silicone Spray Lube in Home Depot last weekend and couldn't resist picking some up. Just on general principle.
On the can it says "Lubricates and waterproofs", "no messy residue" and safe for rubber and plastics, so when I went to lube my chain I thought, why not? I'd already oiled a new cable with it, and that seemed to work ... so I cleaned and flushed the chain, as well as I could without removing it, and doused it good with the WD-40 silicone. I think that's analogous to the idea of using grease over the oil lube.
The jury is still out on it, especially since it hasn't been very wet this week. The chain was truly lubricated, silent and smooth I'll grant it that. But I noticed this morning that I need to relube, which is sooner than expected, and there IS a residue after dust and dirt has accumulated on the chain in a kind of sticky mess. I suspect that just spraying more on and wiping it off won't really do anything for that, nor flush out whatever grit's been captured in the rollers. But I'll bet that it's pretty good waterproofing!
