For that matter, suppose the brick wall had a large mirror attached to it. What is the difference between hitting the wall at 20 mph and hitting the mirror at 20 mph? (Although I have been startled by my reflection, I have not, to my knowledge, been injured by it. The wall, on the other hand, hurts me just the same....)
