I ride my fixed gear old-school rockhopper to work and back. Its got clearance for big tires (studded). Its geared at 48/17 which is 70 gear inches on the 26x1.25" tires I run. Freddy Fenders, Cygolite 12.5w light, rack an pannier are all it takes. Sure, its a tank, but for what I need its perfection on wheels. So yeah, fixed gear is great for commutes. Did I mention the lack of maintenence that it needs? And the ultra reliability?
