I just bought a used bike that had a heavily greased chain. Not only was grease all over the chain rings, cogs, and derailleurs, it must have entrapped every piece of road dirt it had ever encountered and become a filthy, grit-filled mess. Oil your chains and replace when needed. They're cheap enough.
