I've ridden a lot of different bikes. My Soma doublecross does not ride like a minivan.

We are talking about a daily commuter, right? A steel cross frame is a fine choice for a daily commuter. The OP may want to fix up his old bike for sentimental reasons but a modern bike has its advantages.
