Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

Do not assume that the other FD has more outward travel. Shimano designs these to wok within a narrow band of chain lines. An excessive chainline offset for one derailleur is like to be excessive for most.

Meanwhile, did you measure the chainline before removing the crank? WTF not? Doing so would have taken 10 seconds and yielded critical information. Now we can only guess. There's a decent chance that the problem could be solved (and could have been days ago) but you insist on making it as hard as possible by keeping critical info out of the hands of those who would and could help you.

Count me out until/unless you measure the chainline.
