Whether your purchase violates other goals you have such as a simple lifestyle is something only you can decide. Personally I have the same goal and would only enjoy a new bicycle in the window but would not have to have it as mine. I absolutely love my surly lhdt - partly because it meets all of my cycling needs. I don't identify with having different bicycles for different types of riding.
