It's really easy to customize the display..

Chasing the green triangle and racing yourself is kinda fun too, although for the commute I usually just try to beat the yellow square average consistently, which of course leads naturally to a slowly increasing average speed/shorter time

You can also do HR/Time Pace and a lot of other things that are more applicable to hiking or other kinds of workouts than cycling.
You can even use a HRM in this mode to monitor sleep / recovery patterns this way.

One thing I haven't figured out how to do is get the hiking mode to not think I'm stopped when it involves technical climbing or steep mountaineering ascents.
since the GPS detects no lateral movement it thinks you aren't going anywhere :-)
That is wild I never thought about wearing my HRM while I sleep, had relegated that to something like a fitbit.
